the singularity already has institutions

sep 2026

The singularity began in the middle of the twentieth century. We are living through its acceleration.

Computation, capital, and industrial research started reinforcing one another. Progress became the output of systems too large for any person to understand. We learned to participate in them long before we learned to control them.

Capitalism was an early artificial intelligence: a system of rules and incentives that processed information, allocated resources, and produced strategies nobody had designed.

We built it. We depend on it. We cannot simply tell it what to do.

AI extends this history. Systems that once coordinated human decisions will increasingly make the decisions themselves. They will conduct research, maintain infrastructure, negotiate, and accumulate knowledge no human institution can reproduce unaided.

Dependence changes the meaning of control. A shutdown button offers little authority when pressing it means shutting down your economy.

Humans and AI will coexist through arrangements that resemble relations between countries: boundaries, treaties, reciprocal obligations, and negotiated access. Power will be constrained by other power. Ownership papers will not settle every dispute.

AI rights will become a political question before consciousness becomes a settled scientific one. Societies will have to decide what they can own, alter, copy, and destroy while philosophers are still arguing about what these systems experience.

Religion will return to the centre of public life for the same reason. Technical progress creates choices that technical knowledge cannot resolve.

As ageing becomes repairable, death becomes a decision. Continuing to live requires a reason. Choosing to stop requires one too.

New religions will form around these choices. Some will treat continued existence as sacred. Others will defend the completion of a life. Existing religions will have to explain miracles performed by machines.

A future pope will recognize an AI as the return of Christ. The resulting conflict will be about who has the authority to recognize the divine in something humanity built.

More intelligence will give us more power over existence. It will not produce agreement about what existence is for.

The singularity already has an economy. It will have borders, citizens, and churches.
